By Cuban Cigars Asphodel-Norwood - It was a homecoming for the ages and a long way from hay wagon gigs at Gramma Flo's Restaurant. Norwood's hometown heroes Three Days Grace, international rock headliners now, filled the A-N Community Centre with their chart-topping songs and a whole lot of love to help the Norwood Lions make the final payment of their $350,000 community centre commitment. Opening the concert was My Darkest Days, another local band heading for stardom. 3DG has wanted to do a hometown show for a while but when you're opening for the Rolling Stones, selling millions of CDs and filling arenas across North America that's hard to do. "It's really cool to come back," lead singer Adam Gontier told The Shield during a quiet pre-show chat. "Because it's such a small town, it's hard to get everything lined up to put together a show but we did and it's awesome. We grew up with so many of these people. It's definitely going to be a different vibe. It's always good to have a certain intimacy with the crowd and this venue allows for that." The band (Norwood’s Brad Walst on bass, drummer Neil Sanderson of Peterborough and guitarist Barry Stock of Toronto) is taking time off to record their third CD. "We're going to do some one-offs in the summer. Mostly down south and out west," Brad added. "But we'll start writing until we get the record done. We've been busy. We've been on tour for two years so it's time to take a little bit of a rest but at the same time we get pretty anxious when we're down. It's nice to be home but you start to get that itch." "We have a lot of time to kill during the day when we're on the road and tend to hang out with our guitars and come up with different ideas," Adam says. "We never really put anything super-solid together on the road. We kind of just put together ideas." The boys are humbled by the trailblazing Seattle bands they followed (Nirvana, Pearl Jam) when they first hooked up 16 years ago at NDHS. Now that they headline big arenas themselves their appreciation is even keener. "It's cool to hear that younger musicians say Three Days Grace is a huge influence on them," Cohiba cigars says. The pair always knew they wanted to make a living playing music. Their acoustic sets at NDHS set the stage for today's popular Java Fests. "I always wanted to play music no matter what. Whether it was on a big scale or smaller scale," Adam said. "We've definitely grown as performers but we're roughly the same guys." There's nothing wrong with would-be musicians dreaming big, says Brad, but you've got to work hard at it. 0 Comments
